Welcome to the summer edition of Insight. This issue comes at a time when Illinois working families are struggling to make ends meet, and many are faced with the threat of foreclosure. The question is what can we do to help?
Awareness is key, and credit unions can do a great deal in delivering the news that there is hope. This issue includes free public awareness initiatives that are easy to implement, and important for the community and members you serve.
My goal is to make Insight a publication you find informative, useful and look forward to reading, but I need your feedback, ideas and comments. Please send them on. Thank you!

Foreclosure Prevention
Despite the surge in consumer education and news reports about foreclosure rates and mortgage delinquencies, nearly 70% of homeowners facing foreclosure are not talking with their lender. Instead, they reach out to people they trust, like you. Let them know they have options by distributing free flyers, hanging posters in common gathering spots, and promoting the HOPE line (888)995-HOPE on your website. The free material is just a click away. Take me there now!

Help Seniors, Veterans and Others Claim their Economic Stimulus Payment In Illinois nearly 250,000 eligible retirees, people with disabilities and veterans have not filed for the Economic Stimulus Payment. A tax return MUST be filed to receive an economic stimulus payment, since many of these individuals are not required to file a tax return, they may be eligible and not know it. It's not too late to file, October 15 is the deadline. Credit Unions can help spread the word by distributing free material. Find It Here

People Helping People
Last year, Aurora Burlington Credit Union CEO Kelley Howard decided she wanted to reach out and help the underserved in her community. She volunteered with RITAS Ministries teaching basic money math skills to ex-offenders (both youth and adult).
"The program gives ex-offenders a chance to rebuild their lives, find meaningful employment and become productive members of the community. I am proud of their willingness and desire to learn".
CEO Howard says she looks forward to continuing her involvement, and hopes that other credit unions will work with community organizations to develop programs to serve the underserved. "The only way to connect with the underserved is by forming alliances with community partners". | | |
